Sunday Morning with Nina & Billie
Friday morning I drove to work with a headache. Something was definitely coming on. I spent yesterday mainly in bed. By last night I felt better and Ruben and I went to go see The Love Guru. Justin Timberlake really stole the show. He was very funny. Today I awoke feeling better. Although I didn't make it to the gym at all like I had planned on this weekend, my stay in 'Slugdom' is officially over. I did walk Abby the other night. I don't know how great of a work-out I got because I spent the majority of time untangling her from bushes and trees. Our neighborhood is home to many stray cats which Abby feels obligated to chase at every opportunity. Her nick name is 'Rocket Dog' for obvious reasons. At least the next day my body felt like it had accomplished something.
We awoke to a very hot morning, with temps already near 100 degrees. I had an inkling to hear some Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. This is such wonderfully perfect Sunday morning music. The only thing missing was rainfall. I placed the Nina Simone CD in first. Oh how that music can bring me to tears! No one can sing about lilac wine like she can. No one can express the raw emotion of a rough life through a song like she can. Or how you can love someone so much that it could cause a rose to bloom in the snow. I have tears in my eyes just typing it.
My animals love music. Here are Abby and I dancing to Nina. My p.j.s are mismatched and my hair is a mess, but this is the reality of a Sunday morning. Monsoon also loves music. A few years ago I spent a Sunday afternoon painting the kitchen while listening to Billie Holiday. Monsoon had the run of the house in those days. Suddenly I had this dancing weasel jumping all over me. It took me awhile to figure it out but its that 'wah-wah' sound of the old trumpets that she loves. Whenever I play that song she goes crazy. It is the funniest thing I have ever seen. This has also gotten to be a good tool to use when trying to lure her out of one of her many hiding spots. I place the CD in and next thing I know, I'll see her pointy little face peering around the corner. She knows a good thing when she hears it.
This great soundtrack has motivated me to get on some tasks that I have put off way too long. I am a collector of things and have piles of paper on pretty much every counter in the kitchen. I went through these today and finally got rid of most of it. I also cleared out all the old magazines (some dating back to December) that I have held on to in another pile next to the bed. I may not have gotten very far in the exercise department but it is still better than crashing out on the sofa watching tv. I was still productive and I had an awesome soundtrack to guide me through.
I will spend the rest of the afternoon in the air-conditioned comfort of the library. This evening I will attempt to bring the dancing maniac pictured above (the 4 legged one) for a walk again. Then Ruben and I will dine on ice cream for dinner (mine will be fat free). I'm trying to convince him to make a small pitcher full of sangria as well. I hope we end the day in the garden swing while sipping cool sangria from mason jars. What better way to end another Sunday?
